The manufacturer Western Digital announces the arrival of a 12TB model under the brand HGST Ultrastar HE12 and baptized. This hard drive features eight trays, against seven for his current brother 10TB, but retains the same thickness, namely 2.61 centimeters. A feat made possible by a new cooling system with helium and not the air. Better cooling than Western Digital optimized using thinner disks.
Not surprisingly, the Ultrastar hard drive HE12 uses the new PMR recording technology, known as Perpendicular Magnetic Recording. The rotational speed of the new model reaches 7200 rev/min and the side of Western Digital announces rate 255 MBps.
The manufacturer has already announced that the Ultrastar HE12 will be offered in two versions: a mainstream SATA and SAS for servers. It will not be too hasty to acquisition because the release date has not been formalized, but it will not be until early 2017, for the future release of 14TB it might even be in several months. For the 12TB, no price is mentioned, but knowing that the 10TB is priced around 700 euros, it will inevitably be above this rate.
